Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wants the US government to lift economic sanctions against the country as soon as possible. If the United States does not, Iran will no longer honor its previous agreements on its nuclear program, Khamenei said in a speech to air force officers.
The United States and a number of European countries signed an agreement with the country in 2015, with Tehran pledging to limit its nuclear program in return for the repeal of existing sanctions. But in 2018, then-President Trump walked out of the deal and stepped up sanctions against the country. Iran’s economy and healthcare are badly affected.
In response to the tougher sanctions, Iran began to violate the nuclear deal further.
Roll back nuclear steps
Khamenei hopes to return to the 2015 deal. US President Biden has vowed to reinstate the deal, but demands that Iran first roll back a number of nuclear measures.
This now leads to a dead end. To put pressure on the US government, Iran is threatening, among other things, to block foreign inspections of the nuclear program.
