Football manager Andries Jonker is unwilling to comment on his choice to leave Eredivisie top scorer Fenna Kalma and experienced player Shanice van de Sanden out of his final World Cup selection. According to Jonker, the Orange have more good attackers than they could select. “I opted for a balanced composition in which I also want to have enough midfielders,” explains the coach.
Jonker motivated his choice for Katja Snoeijs saying the ‘energetic striker’ is doing well at Everton as a starting point. “But I’m also charmed by Fenna Kalma. It was a tough decision. I also think the fundamental reason is something between the player and the coach.” Kalma has been the Eredivisie’s top scorer as a striker for FC Twente for the past two seasons. According to Jonker, the level of the competition has nothing to do with the choice.
European champion Van de Sanden also fell victim to competition up front. The Liverpool forward winger was out of form earlier this year so missed international matches. “Shanice worked incredibly hard and deserves a big compliment for that. But I had to make a choice,” Jonker explained. Van de Sanden will travel as an extra player to Australia and New Zealand, where the World Cup kicks off for the Orange on July 23.
Lineth Beerensteyn, Lieke Martens and Esmee Brugts, just like Snoeijs, have a chance to find a place in the orange attack.
