With videos and podcastThe fourteenth stage of the Tour de France turned out to be a great battle between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingaard. On the last of five climbs, Pogacar attacked but didn’t break Vinegaard. The stage victory went to Carlos Rodríguez, who escaped on the descent to Morzine.

After a third category climb and three first category climbs, the peloton was already broken enough by Jumbo-Visma. The Dutch team rode in the lead all day to skillfully demolish Tadej Pogacar. But when approaching the 11.6 kilometer hors category climb, there was suddenly no more yellow-black at the front of the peloton and the UAE Emirates team took the initiative.
The group thinned out, but was not attacked for a long time. Sepp Kuss then went empty for his leader, but the real acceleration came after a sign from Pogacar to teammate Adam Yates, who took the lead and shook the tree hard. Only Pogacar and Vingaard could follow.
Pogacar’s expected attack followed soon after. Pogacar took three seconds, maybe five, but Vingaard didn’t give up and fought back. Side by side, they started the last kilometer of the Joux Plane. Also knowing that a major sprint was coming. In this sprint, it became chaos because of the traffic in front of the riders. Just when Pogacar wanted to accelerate, he was hampered by the engines. A few seconds later, Vingaard attacks and gains three seconds on Pogacar.
In the 12 kilometer descent to Morzine, Pogacar and Vingaard mainly looked at each other. Carlos Rodriguez was able to take advantage of this and again joined Adam Yates. The Spaniard immediately left the two cups behind him and took all the risks on the descent. It resulted in Ineos’ second straight victory for the 22-year-old Spaniard, after Michal Kwiatkowski had already cheered on Friday. Pogacar won the sprint for second place and thus ensured that at the end of the day Vingaard gained a second on Pogacar. The gap is now ten seconds, with another tough mountain stage on the schedule on Sunday.
“It’s amazing. I have no words for it,” Rodríguez said after the stage. “After being released, I honestly didn’t expect this to be possible. I tried to focus on myself and complete the climb as quickly as possible. At my own pace. The others watched each other , so I thought: I’m going full throttle until the finish. I took risks and came close to crashing a few times, but I’m very happy with this victory,” said Rodríguez, who is in the standings moves up to third place almost five minutes behind Vingaard.
High Level Battle
Awareness is growing at Jumbo-Visma that the Tour de France can sometimes be decided by bonus seconds. Because of the unique defeat that Jonas Vingaard thus won on Saturday in the first alpine stage against his rival Tadej Pogacar, the sports director Grischa Niermann even qualified his Danish leader as the moral winner of the day. ,,But you don’t buy much there,” the German said after the ride. “The Tour can be decided in seconds. They are so close to each other. This is a high level battle. The second bonuses are really necessary. Unless someone cracks on one of the next rides. Then it becomes painstaking work.
,,We are developing another battle plan,” Niermann said. “We wanted to make the race difficult today and we did that. Of course, you hope to gain more time. But Pogacar is also in great shape. Like us. -shows difficult. But we have no guarantee that Pogacar is inferior to Jonas. It’s a boost that if pushed into a gap, it comes back again. Jonas is at least as strong, we hope in the team leader’s car which he will pass over. But of course he feels better than me how he feels.
Sepp Kuss is also doing a good job in the top 10 of the rankings. The American from Jumbo-Visma finished fifth and climbed to sixth place in the standings. Pidcock falls from the top 10. The Briton lost 8 minutes and 40 seconds to teammate Rodríguez and is now eleventh after another stage has been closed by a violent crash. No less than seven riders gave up during the stage, including Romain Bardet and Louis Meintjes as the most famous victims.
