The EU must act as a mediator between Iran and the United States to secure the 2015 nuclear deal. This is opposed by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif CNN International Said.
According to Geoffrey, Joseph Borrell, the top representative of European foreign policy, should act as a mediator. As co-ordinator of the joint committee overseeing the deal, he could outline “actions to be taken by the US and Iran.”
The nuclear deal was signed in 2015 by Iran, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union. Its purpose is to reduce Iran’s nuclear program. In May 2018, former US President Donald Trump decided to unilaterally withdraw his country from the deal and re-impose sanctions on Iran. His successor, Joe Biden, has already said he wants to rejoin the deal that came under President Barack Obama.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blingen said on Monday that Iran “has only a few weeks to develop nuclear weapons.”
Iran hopes that the United States will take the first step in reaching an agreement by lifting sanctions against Iran.
