Iran does not adhere to nuclear deal and will enrich uranium by up to 60% | Abroad

Iranian state media report that Natanz’s main nuclear facility is receiving 1,000 new centrifuges to enrich uranium. Problems were noted there at the end of last week, a day after new centrifuges were put into operation. According to Iran, Israel, the sworn enemy, is guilty of sabotage.

Iran is not respecting the nuclear deal with its nuclear activities. The deal was aimed at preventing Iran from producing nuclear weapons, an ambition Iran says it does not have. For these weapons, the uranium must be enriched to more than 90% purity. Among other things, the limit of 3.67% was set in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

Iran has also accepted controls from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The United Nations nuclear watchdog confirmed earlier this year that Iran is enriching uranium at 20% purity after the country itself announced it. This year, the agency’s inspections were limited.

The deal has been honored so far, US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the United States in mid-2018. Sanctions previously lifted against Iran were then reinstated. In response, Tehran decided to no longer adhere to the agreement.

Iran continues to discuss resuming the nuclear deal with China, Russia, France, the UK and Germany this week. The United States is indirectly involved in the discussions through intermediaries. It examines what US sanctions should be lifted and what Iran needs to do to be able to comply with the deal again.
