Iran consults with world powers on possible US return to nuclear deal

The return of the United States to the nuclear deal with Iran seems to be another step closer. Tomorrow, Iran will digitally meet with China, Russia, France, Germany and the UK to discuss the US position. Iran has so far held back from reinstating the deal.

According to various sources, preliminary talks have already taken place between Iran and European countries, reports the Reuters news agency. An Iranian proposal to break the deadlock will be discussed tomorrow. The United States said they welcomed the meeting.

“ The worst case ever ”

In 2015, Iran signed a nuclear deal with five countries it will meet with tomorrow, as well as with the United States and the EU. The deal meant Iran would enrich uranium to a lesser extent and admit international nuclear inspectors in return for economic sanctions relief.

Under President Donald Trump, the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal. Trump called his predecessor Obama’s deal “the worst deal ever.” Subsequently, Iran no longer considered itself obligated to abide by the terms of the agreement and decided to re-enrich uranium to a higher level. Trump’s successor Joe Biden wants the United States to be part of the deal again.

New centrifuge

Iran is not interested in this, however. The country wanted the United States to take the first step in removing the sanctions. However, the United States wanted Iran to reverse uranium enrichment. To increase the pressure, Iran decided at the end of February to stop admitting inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) into the country for unannounced checks.

It was also announced today that the IAEA has determined that Iran has commissioned a new centrifuge in the new nuclear reactor at Natanz. This allows it to enrich uranium more quickly.
