Arsenal’s women won the League Cup on Sunday under the watchful eye of injured Vivianne Miedema. With Victoria Pelova as a substitute, ‘The Gunners’ won the final against Chelsea at Selhurst Park to a sold-out crowd 3-1.
Samantha Kerr put Chelsea ahead in the second minute, but more than twenty minutes later Arsenal had overturned the deficit with goals from Stina Blackstenius and Kim Little. Thanks to an own goal from Niamh Charles, the final score was already on the scoreboard at half-time.
Pelova, who swapped Ajax for Arsenal in early January, entered the pitch after almost an hour of play. More than half an hour later she was able to celebrate with her new teammates. Arsenal have won the League Cup for the sixth time and are therefore the most successful club in the FA Cup tournament.
The injured Miedema also took part in the lap of honor on the pitch afterwards. The Arsenal and Orange top scorer is recovering from a serious knee injury but came out to cheer on her teammates in the cup final.
On Instagram, Miedema first shared an image that Arsenal had made with photos of all the players who helped win the League Cup, including herself. She then posted a photo of her left leg on the treatment table. “Priorities,” added Miedema. The forward is likely to miss next summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
In the Super League, Arsenal are fourth behind Manchester United, Manchester City and defending champions Chelsea.
