The city is still there. It may sound a bit dramatic or out of the world, but I hadn’t been in weeks. I am at home, I work, I walk around the neighborhood. But just for the city, I don’t do that anymore. And in my head, everything was closed, locked. Fortunately, this is not the case.
I brought my The youngest girl to a friend who lived in the center, above a large clothing store where the models were in the dark. I left my bike and walked the shopping streets for a bit. Precisely because I hadn’t been there for a while, I walked around like a sort of historian. Few new collection points were available. Much has been closed. But the city was far from deserted. There was a line of people in front of the cheese factory, perfectly distant and wearing masks. Three at the same time in the store. I participated and got two pieces from old farmers. I continued, another row. This one was for the chocolate factory. Valentine’s Day hearts in display case, caramel-sea salt-lavender chocolates in shiny boxes. All the restaurants I have passed had take-out menus glued to the windows and i decided to order indonesian kebab and lebanese this week just because everything looked so good and most importantly so friendly. All over town people were walking around with coffee. There are plenty of places you can pick it up. With a cookie or a sandwich.
I had an espresso from the cafe where I had until a year ago came with pleasure. Sometimes I secretly drank coffee with my wife during working hours. We cycled there in four minutes, she in nine. Then we sat on the couch and it was slightly different from meeting at home. I could go now, have a coffee and a croquette. The chairs were on the tables, the tables were pushed against the wall.
I am a homebody, I have already told you. I never go out, even the theater and the film quickly find me a problem. But I miss the bustling city. The dark shops, the closed cafes, it’s so bare. So fragile. All these tents and shops and cafes with their pickup points, delivery service, queues outside and rules inside, they’re doing their best. And my fellow citizens walking around with their coffee to go. It’s sad and beautiful at the same time.
