As the weekend quickly approaches, Nieuwegein prepares for a cold and wet weekend, full of exceptional weather conditions. At least, if we are to believe the meteorologists. On Saturday evening, the wind chill can drop to minus 20 degrees and a layer of snow of at least 30 cm will cover Nieuwegein. Our videographer Jos van Vogelpoel took a look today at the high water levels of the Vreeswijk dike.
The Lek in Vreeswijk and Hoogzandveld runs along its banks, but gratefully uses “Room for the River” and gently touches the dike. The lock gates on the Oude Sluis in Vreeswijk were closed earlier this week to provide back pressure, in order to keep the river water from flowing to the sea. Water in the Lek, among others, will not drop until the end of next week.
Room for Lek
The activities of “Room for the River” consisted of approximately 1 million m3 of earthworks to dig canals, lower the quays and make clay cavities (measure against infiltration and erosion). Room for the Lek is one of 34 measures in the “Room for the River” program.
Climate change means more water will flow through the Lek in the future. “To give the Lek more storage space and to drain the water more quickly, we are installing shore channels in the floodplains. We will also lower the access barrier to Stuweiland (Ossenwaard). This makes the dam less of an obstacle during flooding and we promote the flow of the river ‘ according to Combinatie Martens and Van Oord – Heijmans, who carried out the Room for the Lek project in mid-2015.
Snow
On Saturday snow, ice and a strong easterly wind are expected. In addition to measures for flooding, the Rijkswaterstaat has also taken measures to combat slippery conditions.
Sunday, it will be very cold with a lot of snow and a (fairly) strong easterly wind, in the northern coastal zone, strong to stormy with risk of strong gusts. Freezing rains can also occur in the southeast. After the weekend still very cold with maximum temperatures around -5 ° C during the day and moderate to severe frosts, possibly very strong at night and in the morning. There can also be snow from time to time.
