Jumbo-Visma Development has completed a draft of the competition program. The Dutch WorldTour team’s training team immediately starts the season with a professional race. At Samyn, the team will include Olav Kooij and Axel van der Tuuk at the start. With that last look Flash Cycling also back to training camp last week.
Just like the men’s and women’s teams, the training team has also recently moved to Alicante. There was good training under the Spanish sun, says Van der Tuuk. “It was good to be together again, the last time was during a mountain bike weekend in November,” begins Drent, 19. “You also shoot yourself to a higher level during such a camp. You are also a little more focused. You have little to worry about: you will practice and dinner will be ready when you return. It’s great that this can take place. We were divided into three teams in different parts of the hotel.
Apart from Finn Fisher-Black (who is preparing in New Zealand for the national championships next week and flies immediately to Europe the next day), everyone was there. “In a camp like this you also get optimal rest, because you just have to concentrate on your training,” Van der Tuuk continues. “I think it’s ideal to cultivate those last percentages before the season. You really challenge yourself. Everyone is there to get the best out of themselves and this is naturally stimulated. In the end, you only grow from this. You cannot imitate such situations at home. “
Technical training
During training camp, the development team runners also did a number of technical training sessions. Jumbo-Visma had hired a former mountain biker and an acquaintance of the Oscar Saiz team. “It’s important for safety that you master as many technical aspects as possible,” Van der Tuuk explains. “In the peloton you often see that things go wrong which you can easily avoid with a number of technical training sessions. Some guys really benefit from it. The decision in the competitions is also made more and more in the descents. So it is certainly not an unnecessary luxury to do this. “
With Saiz, they mainly trained on postures on the bike, in order to better control the distribution of pressure in the turns. Compared to the same camp last year, young Drent has learned a lot. “I really improved a lot,” he explains. “It doesn’t just apply to me, actually to everyone. Who impressed me the most? Hard to say. Above all, I think that we are very strong in terms of width. We did a few competitions and the level was really high. We were well matched in this area. On the way up, I was particularly impressed with Archie Ryan. It is really very strong in the mountains. “
Soon a more in-depth interview with Axel van der Tuuk, in which he returns to 2020.
