SCHAGEN – Every Sunday, more than a hundred children train in the fields of Schagen United. The initiator of this football school is Koen Stam. The rest of the week, the 34-year-old coach is on the pitch in southern Rotterdam. Stam is Dick Advocaat’s assistant in Feyenoord there.
“It can’t be compared,” says Koen Stam of the differences between his duplication. “One day you train at a professional level and the next day you are among children who dream of a life as a professional footballer.”
To tease
This season is not going very well with Feyenoord. Poor results, the youth academy is booming and times are tough financially. The kids at his football school can’t help but tease him about it. “Then they ask if I’m okay, I like that.”
“The selection continues here and there and it is inherent if you want to take action”
At the moment things are not going well at the stadium club, but Stam believes in better times and sees that changes are already underway. “The selections continue here and there and it’s inherent if you want to take action.”
Future
Next season, Arne Slot will take over from Dick Advocaat. The former AZ coach is also taking his assistant Marino Pusic to Rotterdam. John de Wolf will also be part of the technical team. “The question is whether there will be room for me in the A selection next season,” said Koen Stam.
