The French press freedom organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has taken legal action against Facebook. According to the organization, the platform violates its own terms and conditions by failing to provide users with a secure environment, reports Endgaget.
According to RSF, Facebook is not taking sufficient measures to prevent the spread of hatred and disinformation. The organization calls Facebook’s promises to provide a safe environment for users “largely a lie.”
According to RSF, several studies show that Facebook plays a major role in the spread of disinformation. For example, Avaaz, a US legal group specializing in online disinformation, released one last week. report stating that Facebook billion missed opportunities to prevent its spread.
Among other things, this would not have happened often enough in the run-up to last year’s US presidential election.
The group of lawyers analyzed 100 of the most popular Facebook pages that repeatedly disseminated disinformation for the study. This would have shown that the pages had been viewed billions of times during the March to October period of last year.
There is no guarantee that the trial will be successful. Facebook says it is already taking many steps to combat the spread of hate and disinformation.
