After last month’s elimination in the cup tournament by sc Heerenveen, the Rotterdam team left a lot of points in the competition. The away matches against FC Twente (2-2), FC Groningen (0-0) and AZ (4-2) scored just 2 points.
In VVV, Feyenoord encountered an upset team, which had lost to Vitesse (2-0) earlier in the week in the semi-finals of the Cup tournament. The Limburgers also had to do without Georgios Giakoumakis, Eredivisie’s top scorer with 23 goals. The Greek striker was out of form and was therefore absent from De Kuip. VVV gave Feyenoord plenty of room to attack.
The home side didn’t even have to play very well to achieve a generous victory. Jens Toornstra, who had been honored before kick-off for having recently played his 250th game for Feyenoord, opened the scoring in the 14th minute at the request of Luis Sinisterra. This preceded the trial and error of VVV defender Tobias Pachonik. Lutsharel Geertruida, back at base replacing injured right-back Bart Nieuwkoop, scored his fifth competitive goal moments later on a corner from Steven Berghuis. Bryan Linssen signed for 3-0 after half an hour. After a through pass from Orkun Kökcü, the striker was able to run freely towards goalkeeper Thorsten Kirschbaum and finished in a controlled manner.
In the second half, Feyenoord ran further at half the speed. Toornstra scored his second goal, after VVV defender Kristopher Da Graca returned the ball to his feet. Berghuis had plenty of room in the 73rd minute to complete his fourteenth goal of the season in front of Kirschbaum from the edge of the penalty area and Eric Botteghin led the 6-0.
