Officials preparing for unrest following this year’s election, especially in the absence of clear winners on November 4, point to the highest example of extra layer of security.
Washington, D.C., Metro Police Chief Peter Newsham warned the district city council last month. Several businesses in the Downtown DC area near the White House have been climbing doors and windows for the past two days in anticipation of possible protests.
Last summer, some businesses smashed their windows and other property was damaged by protesters.
Police are working with intelligence officers to ensure the security of Washington, D.C.’s airspace in the event of an attack from above, Burke added, adding that they usually do so when preparing for tense moments.
“If there are no winners, you will find substantial stops of officers at all levels across the capital,” Burke said. “Officers will receive holiday cancellations, extensions of shifts and full deployment of officers throughout the city.”
