Family football star Kaptein (17) has already seen World Cup participation coming

For young soccer star Wieke Kaptein, his top spot in the World Cup selection didn’t come as a total surprise. Friends and family have already seen it coming, the midfielder noted heading into the tournament in Australia and New Zealand later this month. At 17, Hengelo is the youngest Dutch participant in a World Cup.

“You’ve done a good job this year and you deserved to be there,” Kaptein said before national coach Andries Jonker announced his final selection on Friday. “But of course I didn’t assume that and I think it’s a great honor to be able to join the biggest tournament in the world. It’s special and exciting at the same time.”

According to the double international, he is asked a lot more at Orange than at his club FC Twente, where Kaptein has been playing in the Eredivisie for two years. “It’s much more difficult here and at a much higher level. I had to show up in training and I did.”

Meanwhile, Kaptein enjoys everything that happens to her. “My parents say I have to do this every day. Everything is going really fast now, of course, but I’m really enjoying it. Also in the farewell game against Belgium (5-0 win). That’s all new and special. I am experiencing now.”

Kaptein came on Sunday in the last real test before the World Cup against Belgium in the second half. The teenager made her debut against Poland in April.
