WEESP – While the Weespersluis district is currently largely made up of sand, the population figures for the town of Weesp are already skyrocketing. In 2020, 37 new residents per 1,000 inhabitants were added. This makes Weesp the fastest growing municipality in the Netherlands.
he Central Bureau of Statistics released those figures today. Figures that do not surprise Danielle Clemens. “Weesp has the utility of a city, but the pleasantness of a village. Although we should certainly not call Weesp a village,” she adds quickly.
Clemens sold a large part of the new houses in Weespersluis on behalf of Vuurtoren Makelaars. “There’s actually no one here who isn’t enthusiastic about houses. Every house has something unique about it and this style is very popular with many Amsterdammers.”
“Then it turned out that we were the 20,000th resident of Weesp”
There, Clemens hits the nail on the head: Weesp’s strong growth is mainly due to the departure of Amsterdammers from the capital. “The location is really ideal, you can be in Amsterdam in no time,” says Merel van Duivenvoorde. “So you don’t have to give up much in Amsterdam, but in Weesp you have a lot more peace, space and big houses.”
She and her husband Simon and son Taeke moved to Weesp last summer. “It turned out that we were the 20,000th resident of Weesp “Simon says. It sums up the same advantages of Weesp over Amsterdam without consultation.” We now both work from home, of course. It would have been much more complicated in our old house in Amsterdam. “

However, rapid growth also poses some problems. For example, Merel points out how difficult it is to bring her son to daycare. “Luckily they’re building a big primary school right now, so that will be fine. At BSO, you just have eighteen month wait times, which is tough.”
Enthusiastic mayor
Mayor Bas Jan van Bochove is not at all surprised by the figures. “It’s an incredibly beautiful neighborhood and I speak to people who love living there. A lot of people recognize and recognize the quality and location of this area.”
He has a clear answer to the question of whether residents are afraid that Weesper’s population growth will come at the expense of these named qualities of the place. “Even after the merger with Amsterdam, Weesp will remain a sort of enclave surrounded by green space because of its location. As far as I’m concerned, Weesp’s population growth is a sign of the livability and vitality of the city. It will not be lost after the merger. “
