Defending champions Olympique Lyonnais failed to win against Juventus in Group C of the Women’s Champions League.
With three Orange internationals at kick-off, Damaris Egurrola and Daniëlle van de Donk in Lyon and Lineth Beerensteyn in the Italians, it was 1-1 in a moderately packed Allianz Stadium in Turin.
A major blemish on Lyon’s second group game was Egurrola’s failure with a – reportedly – serious knee injury. It is not yet known whether the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which begins in nine months, is in play.
From a free kick, Lyon goalkeeper Tiane Endler and teammate Egurrola went for the ball, after which Endler landed on the 23-year-old Orange international. The Olympique Lyonnais players made it clear by gestures that it was not good. The Juventus players also looked pretty scared.
As Egurrola walked off the pitch in tears and with a rolled up knee, several players, including club and country teammate Van den Donk, also looked like they needed to recover from their emotions.
Before the fright, Lindsey Horan had put the French at 1-0. The USA international took a long ball well and passed Juventus goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin, after which she pushed the ball into the empty net.
The 1-1 also came from a French leg, Melvine Malard hit a cross and beat her own keeper. After this own goal, no more goals were scored in Turin.
Miedema on the striker, Bayern on their German
In the other game of the group, Arsenal had a simple evening against FC Zurich. With the Dutch national team’s all-time top scorer Vivianne Miedema in the lead, the Londoners won 3-1.
Miedema had no part in the goals, which were scored by Jordan Nobbs and Lina Hurtig (2x). The goal was scored by Seraina Piubel.
In Group D, FC Barcelona simply won in Sweden, at FC Rosengard under coach Renée Slegers: 1-4. Mariona Caldentey and Bonmati scored twice for the Catalans, Olivia Holdt scored the Swedish goal.
The other game in the group, between Benfica and Bayern Munich, was a spectacular score. The Portuguese led 2-0 with goals from Nycole Raysla and Cloe Lacasse. Goals from Maximiliane Rall and Georgia Stanway equalized again.
It seemed to stay that way until Stanway, who became European champions with England last summer, scored from outside of the sixteen in the very last seconds. For example, the Germans still won the victory in Lisbon in the 98th minute: 2-3.
