“I’m a big football fan, but unfortunately we won’t be showing the group games,” says Marianne van der Wildt, owner of Bar Buka, a queer café in De Pijp. “It’s due to the impossible moments and often we ourselves are late to bed. It’s a shame, because normally it’s full of us during a game.”
Bar Buka is not alone. Café Schinkelhaven, Brecht, Kuijper, De Amstel: many cafés in Amsterdam that show Orange games on the big screen at other football tournaments, at least ignore the group matches. Due to the time difference with New Zealand and Australia, where the World Cup takes place, coach Andries Jonker’s team are playing at quite “impossible” times.
ten hours jet lag
On Sunday morning, the Orange Women will face Portugal at 9:30 am; July 27 at 3 a.m. against the United States and August 1 at 9 a.m. against Vietnam. The Orange team plays every group game in New Zealand, where it is ten hours later than in the Netherlands; in Australia, it’s six to eight hours later.
This may also play a role in the fact that the Women’s World Cup still does not enjoy the same popularity as the men’s tournament. This can be seen in the number of tickets sold alone: less than two thousand Dutch fans have bought a ticket for the Orange Women so far. For comparison: for the World Cup in Qatar, according to the KNVB, around three thousand Dutch people bought a ticket per group match.
Still, there are a few cafes that will stop at nothing. For example, Café Saarein in the Jordaan will open very early on Sunday – at 9 a.m., instead of the usual 4 p.m. – with breakfast, croissants, coffee, tea and a big screen for the Netherlands-Portugal.
mimosa breakfast
Café de Jeugd in Amsterdam East will also open on Sunday to show the game on the big screen. “It may be a bit too early for bitterballen, but a mimosa breakfast will of course be provided,” the cafe said in a press release. Reservations can be made via the website. “We want to give everyone in Amsterdam the opportunity to live with our Orange Lionesses on their way to the World Championship in the most comfortable cafe,” says Shannice Wilner, Marketing Manager. Whether Café de Youth will also broadcast the following matches has not yet been decided.
Brewed by women in Oud-West is also present. The brewery was asked by the international platform This Fan Girl, which is committed to more visibility for women’s football, to broadcast the World Cup. In any case, Sunday’s first game can be seen; the brewery will open earlier especially for this purpose.
Some other cafes, such as Café Kiebêrt and Onder de Ooievaar, promise to show the matches if the time falls below opening hours and on request. Several cafes also indicate that they will be able to broadcast the matches if the women of Orange go far.
What is this chance? At the previous World Cup in 2019, the Netherlands reached the final, losing 2-0 to the United States. But according to the bookmakers, the Netherlands now occupy 8th place in the ranking. The United States takes – as almost always – the top spot, followed by England, Spain, Germany and France.
