Donald Trump’s return to Twitter seems only a matter of time

Super entrepreneur Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter could also mark former President Donald Trump’s return to the platform. Musk’s takeover of the social media platform was announced Friday morning. The high-profile entrepreneur has previously stated that he wants to make Twitter a bastion of free speech and a haven for unsavory ideas.

He repeated the news on Thursday. Twitter should become a “digital town square” where “diverse opinions can be discussed in a healthy and non-violent manner,” Musk wrote. In doing so, he appears to have paved the way for a return to Trump, who was fired from Twitter in early 2021 for inflammatory remarks during a storming of the Capitol.

According to American expert Raymond Mensz, Musk’s takeover of Twitter “comes at a pivotal moment in American politics. Before his comeback, Donald Trump may take back his biggest megaphone,” he wrote on Twitter. “No doubt there are a lot of nervous faces in Washington today.”

According to Labor MEP Paul Tang, Trump can reach more people on Twitter than on his own social media platform, Truth Social. On Twitter, Trump had 88 million followers, while Truth Social only had a few million. “It makes a big difference for Trump,” Tang said on Good Morning Netherlands on NPO 1.

Tang, who deals with tech giants’ influence in the European Parliament, said he “appreciates” Musk’s willingness to stand up for free speech. “You hope and expect that Twitter won’t help spread fake news, hate speech and conspiracy theories. That’s where it starts to spiral.”

He believes Musk “needs to do the work” to prevent fake news from spreading through the site, as previous owners have tried to do. Before Trump was removed from Twitter, his account was suspended several times for spreading false information, Twitter said.

‘Twitter can decide election results’

CDA MP Henri Pontenpaul, his party’s spokesman for digital affairs, said social media platforms could influence elections, for example by deciding who gets a place on the platform and who doesn’t. “That also determines the outcome of the election. I think governments, including the EU, should focus more on regulation. What is and what is not allowed cannot be left to those institutions alone.”

That is the job of governments, says M.P. “They were invented to standardize what is and isn’t. Twitter could decide the future of democracy in America. I think we should be less naive about what social media means to society.

reformation

Soon after the $44 billion acquisition was completed, Musk fired current Twitter CEO Barak Agarwal. A few hours later, the richest man on Earth wrote on Twitter, “The bird is free.” According to an insider who spoke to Bloomberg News, Musk plans to take on the role of new CEO on an interim basis, at least until a new top executive is found.

The New York Times reports that at least four of Twitter’s top executives lost their jobs immediately after the acquisition. In addition to Agarwal, according to sources, there will be finance chief Ned Segal, high-profile legal tycoon Vijaya Gade and general counsel Sean Edgett. Sources say at least one of these high-profile employees was physically removed from Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters.
