In an effort to restore peace, the mayor of Brooklyn City, a city not far from Minneapolis, has imposed a curfew. The demonstrators were also shot with tear gas.
Minneapolis has been under high tension since the trial of Derek Chauvin, the agent responsible for the death of George Floyd, began last month. He died when he was arrested in the same town last May.
Shot by car
Daunte Wright was killed yesterday afternoon. Wright was arrested by an officer for having air fresheners hanging in his rearview mirror, says his mother, who Wright spoke to on the phone. It’s in Minnesota officially banned to have something hanging from your mirror. Police said there was also an arrest warrant for Wright.
In a statement, Brooklyn Police said the man attempted to get into his car again upon his arrest, after which a police officer shot him. The car then drove a few more blocks, after which it collided with another vehicle and came to a stop. Wright died on the spot, a traveling companion, his girlfriend, was injured but is not in danger of death.
The investigation has started
The mayor and the police commissioner have opened an investigation. The police were wearing bodycams on their clothes during the arrest. The images are not yet published. No details were disclosed about the agent either.
State Governor, Democrat Tim Walz, written on twitter “Pray for Wright’s family” and that the state “mourn the death of another black man thanks to the police”.
