Over the past 3 weeks, a high number of Covid-19 cases has been recorded in the town of Morabush in Apoera. A major outbreak was slowed by shutting down this place completely with a total lockdown.

A total of 27 people were swabbed, 22 of whom tested positive and 3 are still awaiting the result. This represents a percentage of 80%, which is very alarming. 5 people were transferred to the MMC hospital in Nickerie, while 4 are in treatment at the Apoera outpatient clinic.

The course of the disease is now taking much longer than in the previous outbreak. Patients face more serious conditions including a painful cough, sore throat, and mild to severe shortness of breath. It was also found that this time is much younger and affected by this disease.

The pressure on Apoera’s clinic is very strong. This clinic is used daily to perform tests and to deliver oxygen cylinders to and from Nickerie.
Patient care is also time consuming. At the moment, there are only 2 breathing apparatuses available, while 4 patients lacking oxygen are already being treated at the clinic.

Dr Ariens from MMC Apoera says the extent of the spread is not yet clear. This week, cases were also found elsewhere in the village. He hopes that it will soon be possible to get a preview of the size. The local doctor also alerted the district commissioner that there was a local crisis situation.
