Burmese government secretly makes its voice heard for the first time: promises a revolution

The interim head of the ousted Myanmar government has vowed to continue a revolution against the authorities. Mahn Win Khaing Than, in a speech on Facebook, called on his compatriots to fight together against the army which removed NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

This is the first public speech by the former Senate head since the coup at the start of last month. He is in hiding, along with other members of the National League for Democracy (NLD). The group refuses to accept the coup. In the video, Mahn Win Khaing Than says Myanmar is in the country’s darkest moment.

Defend against the army

Since the coup, things have been very turbulent in Myanmar. There are daily demonstrations that the police beat hard. Yesterday, 13 people were killed, according to activists. More than 80 people have been killed since the protests began.

Mahn Win Khaing Than wants to form a federal government with the members of his party. It must be made up of “all the ethnic brothers who have suffered various forms of oppression from the dictatorship for decades”. With this government, he wants to pass a law that gives demonstrators the right to defend themselves against the repression of the army.
