These rules are as follows: a player who has played at least 50% of international matches in the two years preceding the transfer will receive a work permit. Those who do not meet this requirement must obtain at least 24 points under the new point system.
Eredivisie is a maximum of 5 points
There is already a difficult obstacle to overcome: the Dutch Premier League (for men and women) is classified in the so-called band 2, in which a maximum of 5 points can be won. Band 1, for comparison, includes the Premier League, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A.
So it won’t be easy for a talented young player to move from the Netherlands to England and win a dream transfer. At the same time, it also means that there is a good chance that the good players will stay in the Netherlands. The KNVB says in a response that it is still studying the rules and doesn’t want to say too much.
What if a contract expires?
Playing in the league, the second tier of men’s football in England, poses similar problems. The wages are good, which is why a change is popular. The same is true here: existing contracts are honored, but what if the contract expires? For a contract extension or a new contract with another club, the player in question suddenly has to meet the new and stricter requirements of the points system.
Take the example of former PSV player Florian Jozefzoon. He is playing this season through a rental construction in Rotherham. The club do not yet know what will happen next. “If we’re happy with him and want to offer him a contract, that would indeed be a problem. But to be honest, we haven’t really looked into it yet.”
