Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will no longer be allowed to hold public office for the next eight years, and therefore will not be allowed to contest the elections. That’s the result of a trial in which Bolsonaro was found guilty of abuse of power on Friday.
Bolsonaro, 68, questioned the reliability of voting machines as president last year. He did so during a meeting with foreign ambassadors which took place a few months before the presidential election. It was broadcast on television.
Five of the seven judges of Brazil’s Superior Eleitoral Court believe Bolsonaro is guilty of abuse of power and media abuse.
Bolsonaro lost the 2022 election by a narrow margin to former President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva. The former president never acknowledged the result.
It’s unclear if Bolsonaro wants to run again, but judges are now blocking those plans for at least the next eight years. Unless otherwise decided on appeal. Bolsonaro has already announced his intention to go to the Supreme Court.
The former president called this statement a “stab in the back”.
