At least 110 injured and possibly ‘considerable’ damage caused by hailstorms in northeastern Italy | Abroad

A heavy hailstorm in Italy mainly affected the region north of Venice. According to local media, hail the size of tennis balls fell and more than 100 people were injured. Roofs, cars and forests are damaged. Vineyards known for their prosecco wines were also damaged.

The Treviso region was particularly affected, but it also collapsed in Montebelluna, Crocetta del Montello and Pederobba.

The showers passed Wednesday afternoon. Damage will be assessed on Thursday. According to the president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, 110 people were injured by hailstones, falls and broken glass. He fears that the storm has caused considerable damage. Windows were smashed, as were cars and solar panels. Italians are sharing images of hailstones bigger than their hands on social media.

“I thank the rescuers and technicians who intervened immediately after the events and continue to work to normalize the situation and assess the damage,” said Zaia. “The hail that fell was absolutely extraordinary, with ice stones measuring more than 10 centimeters in diameter in some cases.” The governor has declared a regional state of emergency for areas affected by extreme weather conditions.

Croatia and Slovenia were also hit by a severe thunderstorm on Wednesday, killing a total of three people. In Croatia, according to the Ministry of Defence, the material damage is significant.

Extreme heat

Italy, like other countries in southern Europe and the Balkans, is suffering this week from extreme weather conditions. Code red applies in many cities due to extreme heat. In many places it is hotter than 40 degrees Celsius.
