In Southern Europe, it is currently raining only one thing: red numbers. The Spanish meteorological service announced code red in part of the country after several heat waves. In Italy, the mercury is currently rising towards the old heat record: 48 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures are also increasingly extreme in the rest of Europe. Where you used to look for a sunny beach and thirty degrees in Provence, it is now almost ten degrees warmer there for much of the summer.
According to scientists, the average temperature in countries like France, Italy, Spain and Greece has already increased by around two degrees in the last hundred years. In the short term, this means more heat waves, wildfires and long summer droughts. In winter it can be colder and snow more than we were used to.
“Much too hot”
A majority of 74% of participants in today’s press release find that going on holiday to southern Europe is less attractive. “Too hot,” someone replied. Another voter says: ,,Last year in the middle of France 37 degrees. Won’t happen again. Really not nice.
Someone else found something to dodge the heat. “I would like to go to southern Europe, but not in the middle of summer and therefore in early spring or autumn.”
