Andreas Kron wins the first stage of the Volta a Catalunya in Calella | Cycling

Kron beat his three companions in the leading group in the sprint. The Dane edged out Luis Leon Sanchez, Lennard Kämna and Rémy Rochas. New Zealander Dion Smith finished fifth in winning the peloton’s sprint, 16 seconds after the leading riders crossed the finish line. Ide Schelling was seventh.

Jumbo-Visma participates in the Spanish race with, among others, Koen Bouwman, Robert Gesink, Steven Kruijswijk and Antwan Tolhoek, while Thymen Arensman (Team DSM), Wilco Kelderman and Schelling (Bora-hansgrohe) and Wout Poels (Bahrain-Victorious ) be part of the pack.

“It’s fantastic,” responded the winner enthusiastically. “My first victory in my first race at this level, I have no words for it. It was a tough day, but as a team we had things under control. Fortunately, I was able to choose the right breakaway. Then I also win the sprint. Owl.”

The Volta a Catalunya covers a total of seven stages and will last until Sunday. The stage race will continue on Tuesday with a time trial.
