The top seven teams in the college football playoff rankings remained unchanged on Tuesday night as Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State continue to hold the top four.
Despite canceling the game in Illinois last Saturday, the Buckeyes were in 4th place, following an increase in COVID-19 cases within the program, in which head coach Ryan Daily tested positive.
Despite playing in only four games, Ohio State is one loss ahead of Texas A&M, which beat LSU at home last week, and one loss to Florida, home to Kentucky.
The Buckies resumed team operations on Tuesday and can be expected to play again in Michigan State this week. They have to play this week and next week to qualify for the Big Ten Championship game.
Alabama and Clemson were left behind by dominating wins, while Notre Dame learned of a place in the ACC Championship game in their first season as a football member on Tuesday. No. 6 Florida, No. 7 Cincinnati and 10th Miami took their places this week, while Georgia took a spot following their win over South Carolina.
The only team to fall in the top 10 of the initial CFP was the team that dropped six places to 14th following the loss to Northwest, Michigan, the first of the season. Iowa State has just moved into the top 10 following Friday’s road win against Texas, who dropped out of the rankings. Iowa State almost secures a place in the Big 12 Championship game, which will face 11th Oklahoma.
The first 10 locations were mostly intact, with significant movement elsewhere. Following a home win over Texas Tech, Oklahoma State moved up eight places to 15th. Following a home win over Nebraska, Iowa moved up five places to 19th.
BYU finished 13th after not playing last week. The FBS Independent Coukers are next scheduled to play against San Diego State on December 12. Cincinnati is also sidelined this week due to COVID issues, and will next play Tulsa on December 12, advancing to 24th.
Oregon, the reigning Pac-12 champion, dropped eight places to 23rd after losing the road to rival Oregon. Washington advanced 3-0 after a historic comeback against Utah, ranking 22nd in its CFP rankings. The Ducks and Huskies are due to play in Oregon next week. The USC, which canceled last week’s game against Colorado due to COVID-19 issues within its schedule, is the 20th-ranked team in the back-12.
Coast Carolina lifted two places to 18th after advancing 9-0 this season. Chandigliers welcomes ESPN College Game Day this week for the 9-1 game against Liberty. Louisiana, which opened the season with a win in the state of Iowa, is ranked 25th in the CFP rankings.
The CFP selection committee will release the December 8 and December 15 rankings before releasing its final list on December 20.
