After Segers’ decision, a new Rutte cabinet seems very far away

Almost half (73 seats) in the House of Representatives supported a motion of no confidence against Rutte. The entire House, except for his own VVD, disapproved of his performance during the reconnaissance, as he did not tell the truth about his first conversation with the former scouts. The report showed that it was indeed ADC MP Pieter Omtzigt, which Rutte firmly denied at first.

“Rutte lied,” ChristenUnie frontman Gert-Jan Segers says about it in an interview with Nederlands Dagblad. This means that “too much has happened” for the small Christian party to enter a cabinet of which Rutte is a member. Segers’ review focuses specifically on the Rutte person, not the VVD itself. “It is about Rutte as the main vector of image of the political culture of the last ten years.”

The only parties that have so far not been explicitly or implicitly excluded (by supporting the motion of censure) from doing business with Rutte are CDA and D66.

Together with the VVD, these parties will have 73 seats in the House of Representatives. In the Senate, the majority is even more distant: the VVD, D66 and CDA occupy only 28 of the 75 seats.

It is also doubtful whether D66 chief Sigrid Kaag and CDA chief Wopke Hoekstra will simply enter a cabinet if Rutte stays in Torentje. The chaos of recognition is affecting the CDA personally, and Kaag has vowed to break with the old political culture during the election campaign. In Thursday night’s marathon debate, the D66 leader said she would have “drawn her own conclusions” if she herself had received such a motion of no confidence.

That doesn’t mean, however, that Rutte will leave like this. He is still popular within the VVD, as confirmed by prominent figures who came to his rescue in the AD on Saturday. Moreover, the VVD became the largest party less than three weeks ago, with a campaign that revolved almost entirely around Rutte: nearly 2 million voters voted specifically for the party leader himself. .
