Tesla offers new full-auto beta update, says Elon Musk can reduce interventions by a third

Tesla has launched a new software update under its full self-driving beta program, which could reduce existing driver interventions by a third, according to CEO Elon Musk.

It has been less than two weeks Tesla has begun pushing the first version of its “fully self-driving” feature In beta for some users.

As we announced earlier, Tesla is already collecting a large amount of data It is now being used to upgrade the system from its test fleet.

Yesterday, Tesla began bringing a new 2020.40.8.12 software update to owners with access FST beta, and they are reporting a smoother experience with AI’s driving capabilities.

CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to say that this update could reduce driver interventions by up to 33%:

“We measure this primarily on intervention probability. This update has several issues, resulting in less than ~ 1/3 of interventions. Many improvements include fun bugs and fixing large Eureka moments. True to most beta releases in my experience.”

As we announced earlier, even though Tesla calls this system “fully self-driving”, in reality a driver must be willing to put his hands on their steering wheel and take control.

Tesla can learn from those interventions to improve its neural networks in future updates.

Musk says the automaker plans to make new updates every 5 to 10 days, leading to a widespread release of the full self-driving beta in the United States later this year.

The CEO warns that bugs will never reach zero, but Tesla’s hope that they will be reduced to being safer than humans, so they can remove driving supervision control:

“Mistakes are never zero, but sometimes the probability of mistakes is much lower than the average person.”

Musk had previously said that Tesla could achieve this goal by the end of 2020, but now it seems unlikely that this will happen with the FSD beta only scheduled for a wider release in December, and that version is still expected to rely heavily on driver attention.

The latest software update released last night comes with an updated user interface with new visuals:
