Voorburg – The Dutch cricket team finished 2nd in the World Cup qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe last week and qualified for the World Cup in India.

The Dutch won against Nepal, USA, West Indies and Scotland. Zimbabwe (group) and Sri Lanka (final) were lost. Voorburg Cricket Club (VCC) provided 8 internationals. “The victory over the West Indies is historic,” confides the record (235!) and ex-international Tim de Leede, now coach of the VCC selection. “We have never won against the best country in the Antilles. And scoring 372 points is a record. Our international record was 315.”

His son Bas (now Durham CC) became man of the match against Scotland in the semi-finals. “On his throw, in the bowling, 5 batters, batters, came out for the loss of only 52 runs, and Bas himself hit 123 runs. To get that many runs with the knife to his throat is very special.”
Tim does not know how many international matches his son has played. “There is a difference between 20 and 50 more games (6 shots per “more”). We were amateurs at the time and only played long matches. The internationals are now also (semi) professional.

The ICC Cricket World Cup will be played against Pakistan (6/10), New Zealand (9/10), South Africa (17/10), Sri Lanka (21/10), Australia (25/10), Bangladesh (28/10), Afghanistan (3/11), England (8/11) and India (11/11).
