As Chief Inspector, Laurens will be responsible for the heritage department, where he will lead the teams for archaeology, monuments, national collections and protected cultural objects. Heritage is at the heart of what makes us Dutch society, monitoring it is vital. Partly based on the 2023-2024 work program, Laurens will commit to improving its quality through supervision in the years to come.
Laurens Schouten: “I look forward to working with the enthusiastic colleagues of the Inspectorate. I was previously responsible for heritage legislation and now I want to devote myself in a different way to the preservation of cultural heritage in the Netherlands. To achieve this, I think collaboration with other interested organizations is important, as is finding new ways to make supervision more effective, such as better use of data and careful selection of urgent topics.”
Laurens previously worked at the Department of Education, Culture and Science, where he was Coordinating Legislative Counsel. In this role, he was responsible, among other things, for the Heritage Act. He then held various positions in the Ministry of Finance, where his last position was Deputy Head of Department. Laurens studied Dutch law and history at the University of Utrecht.
