Orange not ready for World Cup yet, says captain Sherida Spitse

According to captain Sherida Spitse, the Orange team are not yet ready for the World Cup later this month, despite the convincing victory in the farewell match against Belgium (5-0). The Belgians are about as high in the world rankings as first-place World Cup opponents Portugal, but the southern Europeans ‘are still a bit better on the ball’.

According to Spitse, Orange are making “very good steps”. Sneekse, normally a midfielder, is lined up as a fifth defender in the new system. The 33-year-old Ajax player obviously appreciates that. “I really like it. I touch the ball a lot and that’s where my strength lies. I was at the back when I was a bit younger, but it was with four defenders and therefore a completely different way.

captain’s armband

The Frisian born has yet to choose which captain’s armband she will wear during the World Cup. She has a choice of seven tapes with different themes, including one with a message to include. It resembles the OneLove captain’s armband developed by the KNVB. “I could feel that. But as players, we still discuss it amongst ourselves.

The World Cup begins for the Orange on July 23 in New Zealand against Portugal. The first trip to Sydney is scheduled for Friday.
