Sweden expressed Friday its desire to maintain its “good diplomatic relations” with Morocco.
The statement follows Rabat’s recall of Morocco’s ambassador to Sweden in response to the incident in Stockholm last Wednesday in which the Koran was burned during a protest outside a mosque.

A spokesman for the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs must European press let it be known that Sweden regrets Morocco’s decision. He reiterated his country’s desire to improve bilateral relations with the kingdom. “It is regrettable that Morocco chose to recall its ambassador,” the spokesman said.

The Stockholm incident sparked reactions around the world. Several Arab and Muslim countries criticized Swedish authorities for allowing the protest. Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit stressed that “governments have a responsibility not to incite extremism or tolerate the spread of hateful and Islamophobic ideas”.
