A U.S. Postal Service mail carrier from Hudson County, New Jersey, has been arrested for rejecting mail, including 99 ballot papers intended to be issued to West Orange residents, according to U.S. Attorney Craig Carbonito.
Nicholas Fuchen, 26, of Guernsey, is charged with one count of trespassing, one count of secrecy or possession of mail, and one count of obstruction of mail.
Postage delay is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $ 250,000 fine. Blocking postage is punishable by up to six months in prison and a $ 5,000 fine.
The lawyer’s information for the accused was not immediately known.
Fuchen is scheduled to appear in Newark Federal Court on Wednesday afternoon.
According to court documents, about 1,875 pieces of mail – 627 pieces of first class, 873 pieces of standard class, two certified mails, 99 general election votes cast for residents of West Orange and 276 campaign planes from local candidates for the West Orange Town Council and Board of Education – Oct. 2 and Oct. ., Were recovered from Dumpsters in North Arlington and West Orange on the 5th.
The target areas for ballots and campaign flyers are largely democratic areas.
Mail is scheduled to be delivered on September 28, Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 to addresses on some mail routes in Orange and West Orange. Fuchsin was the only mail carrier assigned to send mail to the addresses in the recovered mail, according to court documents, on delivery delivery dates.
The public prosecutor’s office said the recovered mail was put back into the mail stream to be delivered to its desired recipients.
