The Hague FM »Saturday Live on more space for the bike

In the show Saturday Live On Saturday May 8, 2021, RTV Discus will focus in the regular round table on the theme “Free way for cycling”. The guests at the table are: Marcel Kleizen (mayor of bicycles), Herman de Graaf (director Biesieklette), Frans Botma (municipality of The Hague) and Maarten de Vuyst (member of the GroenLinks council). The show can be seen on The Hague TV on Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Make way for the bike! The municipality of The Hague will invest more than 65 million euros in bicycles over the next five years. This is stated in the implementation program “Ruim Baan voor de Fiets 2020-2025”. The Hague wants to become a true cycling city, for all residents of The Hague, visitors and employees. In 2040, the bicycle will be the most important means of transport.

It must become an easy and natural choice for more and more people to use their bikes for short trips in the city and medium distances in the region. A coherent approach has been chosen, in which ‘hard’ infrastructural measures – safe cycle paths and enough good bicycle parking spaces – go hand in hand with ‘soft’ measures to boost cycling and reach new target groups.

In a growing city like The Hague, cycling is an attractive choice for getting around quickly. In 2040, the municipality wants a 50% increase in bicycle movements. An important condition is that there are attractive and safe routes for cycling comfortably and safely. In the years to come, many new high-quality cycle paths will be added. both in the city and in the region. The municipality is also working to improve the flow of traffic at intersections, reduce conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians and red asphalt the last 13 kilometers of tiled cycle paths.
