This year marks the 10th anniversary of the American program Ghost Hunters International came to our cold little country to capture ghosts on camera. WRITE THE, as she liked to say, was a spinoff show from Ghost hunters, one of Syfy’s most popular shows at the time. The show was known for its “ scientific ” approach to ghost hunting and cool footage captured in various locations across the United States. Used to be Ghost Hunters International but just as successful in their mission when they came to the Netherlands?
Called the episode Amsterdamned: Netherlands (very original, Syfy) first aired in the US on January 26, 2011. Under the direction of Barry Fitzgerald, the Ghostbusters team investigated Johan Vlemmix’s famous haunted house “Binnenveld”. The house was advertised on the show as “The Netherlands’ Most Haunted House”. The team also visited the IJmuiden fort. Despite the name of the episode, no ghost in Amsterdam.
Aside from a few weird noises, what they say is a “disembodied conversation” in the basement and a possible ghost seen by one of the researchers, the team has had little success in the infamous Vlemmix house. . They could not record anything and therefore could not definitively conclude that the house is haunted. A disappointment for Vlemmix, who indicates on the show that the house and the events surrounding him have literally ruined his life.
The team had somewhat more success at Fort IJmuiden, which was built in 1876. Over the years, many scary stories have developed around the fort, such as the howl of an invisible dog, the gates that come together. close by themselves and the apparitions of soldiers in the museum. Team WRITE THE has experienced unknown voices, strange noises on several occasions and Barry has even seen an unknown hand resting on a door. Three audio clips were recorded, one of which clearly says “Help”. The team called the fort “haunted” and left with a bunch of cool stories from the Netherlands on their way to their next job.
At the time, we were able to do an interview with the Nachtvlinders WRITE THE Technical Director Paul Bradford. It’s also very cool that the full episode can now be found below via Youtube. Be sure to watch, if only because it’s fun to see how Team Leader Barry tries to birth a Dutch Ghost in Broken German. The episode might not have been very successful in terms of scary evidence, but it’s really cool that our country was in the limelight for an entire episode, don’t you think?
