With Half-Life Alyx, Valve has given us a nice comeback of the Half-Life franchise. It was an episode in its own right and arguably the best VR game ever. While the Half-Life franchise has officially returned from hibernation, it’s completely unclear if and what the series will bring us. And then this question always comes up. Is Half-Life 3 still happening? JJ delved into the history of Half-life to find out if there’s still a chance we’ll ever see Part 3. And all because Valve boss Gabe Newell reopened the door earlier this week …
The return of a lost franchise
From 2007 to 2019, it was completely quiet around the Half-Life franchise. Episode 3, slated for 2008, was never heard and a return of the franchise was never 100% certain. This era ended in November 2019, then Half-life: Alyx was shown for the first time. The game had a March 2020 release date. The time had finally come. The Half-Life franchise was officially back. Or have we actually worked on the show between the years, but we’ve never seen this?
But where is Half-Life 3 now?
But the arrival of Half-Life Alyx hasn’t changed much when it comes to Half-Life 3. Half-Life 3 still isn’t here, and we don’t know if it’s in development. Gabe and his associates refuse to give real, concrete information. However, in an interview this week, Gabe indicated that Half-Life Alyx has changed a bit at the studio. What it was did not say. Just that there were games in development. The question now is whether Half-Life 3 was included. Is the game in development or will it ever happen again? JJ will attempt to answer this question based on the interviews and statements as well as the corporate culture and mores of Valve today.
