On Thursday, the Bundestag debate in the German parliament about the Moroccan Sahara, called by the Greens, was removed from the agenda.
The German Green Party is known for its critical attitude towards Morocco. In calling for a debate on the Sahara issue, the party said they wanted to “prevent military expansion and worsening of the situation in Gurgaon and the Sahara, as well as reactivate the role of UN mediators in the conflict”.
The CDU-CSU alliance (German Christian Democratic Union and Social Christian Union) was rejected by a multi-member foreign delegation.
This is the next setback for Policario, after the United States recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. U.S. recognition has been confirmed by the opening of several embassies in the Sahara of Morocco. For example, the United States is about to open a consulate in Takla. Last Sunday, a senior US delegation led by US Deputy Secretary of State David Schenker visited the embassy premises.
Germany’s official position on the Sahara issue is similar to that of the European Union, as stated in the “Joint Political Declaration” signed in June 2019.
