Running on vacation
Are you the type of runner who always packs your running shoes on vacation? When traveling, your favorite sport is not only ideal for keeping in shape, running abroad is also the ideal way to enjoy your surroundings much more than you otherwise would.
Tips for running on vacation
1.Enjoy and look around
Nothing beats exploring the area in your running shoes. Get up early, leave your music or podcast at home, enjoy the sound of the sea or the silence in the mountains. As you find your rhythm, gaze out over the shimmering sea and observe the place where you are slowly coming to life. Forget your pace, walk in step and grab a fresh sandwich (or pastry – because it’s a party after all) for breakfast on the way back. Nothing must, everything is permitted. The energy you get from running on vacation is just nice.
If you also want to follow a schedule on vacation, for example because you are going to run a marathon in the fall, then these tips are for you.
2. Plan your route and take the GPS with you in case you get lost
Don’t speak the local language? It is of course better to draw your route in advance, but at least take your address with you or your smartphone and put a pin in Google Maps. The name of your accommodation is not always enough to bring you back safely if you get lost. Moreover, you can easily view Google Maps with a mobile data connection. If your phone isn’t working, get a good sports watch with GPS. This can bring you back to where you started. And safety first: Always let someone know where and how long you are going to walk.
3. Protect yourself from the sun
The sun can be treacherous, even if you go for a run early in the morning. Apply a good sunscreen beforehand that resists perspiration and wear a cap if necessary. This sunscreen obtained the best results in the Consumer Association test.
4.Routeplanner on Strava or Garmin
Check via your Strava account (for segments) or in your Garmin app (for routes) which routes are popular in the area. Then you know for sure that you will come across a beautiful and good hiking route. You can download the routes or put them directly on your watch, then getting lost is next to impossible. Don’t have Strava or Garmin? So you can too Runnermaps.nl use it to plan your own route.
5. Provide a hydration system
No doubt most runners will find themselves in hotter areas than they are used to. Consider in advance if you will need a backpack with a water tank, watering belt or other system. Then buy it here at home, because in a remote Italian mountain village there are only a few hiking accessories available, which are probably less suitable. Here you can read how much water you need.
6. Wash your clothes
Maybe there isn’t much room in your luggage for too much running gear, but again wearing sweaty clothes isn’t a good idea. With detergent / capsules / a tube of “travel detergent” and a few clothespins, you save space and can quickly get back on the road fresh.
7. Bring cash
You never know what might happen on the way, a debit card or cash gets you an Uber, taxi or bus back. And of course, very nice if you come across that glacier halfway or just fancy a cold cola.
